The reason why I decided to attempt an Ironman escapes me!
The disciplines themselves provide enough of a challenge let alone the distance. As a Royal Army Physical Training Instructor, I have always felt an inner desire to complete a superior endurance event and such an opportunity rarely occurs to compete with inspirational, focused and selfless people.
I currently work at Headley Court, for the past 18 months I have interacted, rehabilitated patients with a variation of traumatic injuries sustained while on duty. I could not turn away from a challenge when each patient faces a constant challenge to regain optimal function.
I have always focused on other sports such as football, boxing and racquet sports so this is quite a change! I will have to overcome my own inner doubts to achieve this mammoth task. Firstly, I am not a great fan of long distance running, secondly I have yet to find a hair product that can hold my hair in place while underwater ( any suggestions welcome).
More than most will be the swim, my prior efforts of swimming are limited ( although my parents assure me I had swimming lessons as a child ) to date the furthest I have swam is 16 lengths of a 25m pool…quite a way short of the required distance.
Enough talking, Inspirational people are rare, I am lucky enough to say I have met so many in the past 18 months.
Despite the doubts and the challenges that lay ahead… team True Spirit will own Bolton ironman 2012!
